Aux alentours

From the campsite to the village of Les Salles-sur-Verdon

The village of Les Salles-sur-Verdon is about 15 minutes from the campsite, in the direction of the Gorges du Verdon. The road is pleasant and regularly overlooks Lake Sainte-Croix. The village itself is on the edge of the lake, opposite an island that can only be reached with a boat, which you can hire on site.

Les salles-sur-Verdon, the sunken village

What surprises you the first time you come to the village is its modern appearance, hundreds of years removed from other Provencal villages in the Verdon. This atypical appearance is due to the sad history of Les Salles-sur-Verdon, which 50 years ago was located on the plain. All that remains of the medieval village, which sank beneath the lake, are the fountain, the church bell and the wash-house. In 1974, the last inhabitants were evacuated and the last buildings, including the church, were blown up to make way for the Sainte-Croix artificial lake and its hydroelectric dam.
