What to do in Villecroze

The village of Villecroze

The village owes its name to the presence of a Roman villa, a farm called Villa Crosa (crosa meaning hollow, cave, gully), in ancient times. The village's agricultural character continued in the Middle Ages, marked by the establishment of a Benedictine monastery in the 11th century and the presence of a Templar commandery in the 12th century at a place known as Le Ruou. The village's medieval heritage is still very much alive.

Head west of the village to visit the former parish chapel of Saint-Victor. Built in the 12th century, the chapel is now listed as a historic monument and hosts summer concerts by the Académie Internationale de Musique de Villecroze.

Take a tour of the village, wander under the arcades and enjoy the many fountains, and round off your visit with a visit to the municipal park, home to the Villecroze caves.

The Villecroze caves

The village of Villecroze is home to a magnificent wooded park that is a delight to explore in summer. It was here in the Middle Ages that the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Saint-Victor de Marseille settled. Later, in the 16th century, the local lord fortified and developed the site. These improvements can still be seen today.

The Villecroze waterfall

From the 35-metre-high tufa cliff falls a waterfall that feeds the stream that runs through the park. The presence of water makes the park particularly pleasant to visit when temperatures rise in summer.

Markets and festivals

If you can, head to the village of Villecroze on Thursday mornings for the Provencal market. On the first Sunday after 8 August, head to the village for the fête patronale de la Saint-Romain.
